So you’re saying that they make you work even for the story… You’d be amazed how deeply you can dive into it. The lore is embedded in every aspect of the game, from the item descriptions to the architecture to the level design. It’s full of atmosphere and it has really great lore. T: I’m not opposed to a challenge, but nowadays, if I’m playing a single-player game, it’s going to be for a great story or an immersive world.Ĭ: Well actually, Dark Souls 1 in particular excels at both of those. You feel like you’re really learning and getting better, so when you finally beat the giant monster it feels great. But if you have the time to commit to it, Dark Souls gives you this great, tangible feeling of improvement. If you just have an hour or two to kill and you want some laid back fun, it might not be the right game to try. I don’t want my games to be “work”.Ĭ: I get that. You have a goal, like killing some giant monster, and the game gives you the means to do it. T: How so? I want to play a game to have fun, not to bang my head against a wall.Ĭ: The Dark Souls games are all based on having tough but fair challenges. The fact that it’s difficult and sometimes unforgiving actually makes it really rewarding.
I mean, it is hard, but it’s not just hard for hard’s sake. But people hype up the difficulty more than they should. T: Isn’t that the game that has the reputation for being brutally and unforgivingly hard? Where all the memes start with “You Died” and end with “Git Gud!”?Ĭ: Well, yeah.
